NEIDA has supported Mark, a machine setter, in completing the S.A.L.T (Save a Life Today) Workshop, a specialist knife crime awareness and emergency response training programme designed to build practical skills in risk awareness, conflict management and life-saving intervention.

He is also a trained First Aider and Fire Marshal within NEIDA’s manufacturing operations, supporting day-to-day workplace safety and emergency response.

S.A.L.T Workshop Programme

NEIDA supported Mark’s participation in and completion of the S.A.L.T (Save a Life Today) Workshop, a specialist knife crime awareness and emergency response training programme delivered in partnership with Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce and Black Onyx Academy.

The workshop is a structured six-module programme designed to develop practical capability in high-risk situations, combining awareness training with hands-on learning.

It covers:

  • Law and legislation related to knife crime in the UK
  • Knife crime trends and statistics
  • Conflict management and de-escalation
  • Emergency first aid and catastrophic bleeding control
  • Risk recognition and situational awareness
  • Community response and prevention strategies

Delivered through practical scenario-based learning, the course enables participants to apply procedures in realistic environments under the guidance of experienced former Armed Forces instructors. Successful completion leads to a nationally recognised Level 2 certificate, accredited and quality-assured through Highfield.

Community Involvement – The Daniel Baird Foundation

Mark is in contact with the Daniel Baird Foundation, a charity established following the fatal stabbing of 26-year-old Daniel Baird in Birmingham on 8 July 2017.

The Foundation was created to raise awareness of catastrophic bleeding and improve survival outcomes following serious incidents, including knife-related violence and other trauma involving severe blood loss.

Its work focuses on promoting public access bleed control kits in locations such as transport hubs, hospitality venues and community spaces, and increasing awareness of how to respond to catastrophic bleeding before emergency services arrive.

For those involved, including Mark, the cause carries personal significance and aligns closely with his training through the S.A.L.T (Save a Life Today) Workshop.

Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing

Outside of work, Mark runs a community-based running group that is open to everyone. The group also takes part in the #RunAndTalk initiative, supporting open conversation around mental health and encouraging positive wellbeing through physical activity and peer support.

Within engineering, a predominantly male industry, mental health remains an ongoing area of focus. Research suggests that a significant proportion of men working in engineering and similar technical industries report experiencing pressure to suppress emotions in the workplace, with many also affected by stress, anxiety or burnout linked to workload and workplace culture.

Initiatives that encourage openness, movement and peer connection can play an important role in reducing stigma and supporting positive wellbeing across the sector.

Apprenticeships and T Level Engineering Development

NEIDA supports structured apprenticeship and T Level programmes as part of its long-term commitment to developing future engineering talent.

The business currently works with three T Level students alongside a number of apprentices, providing hands-on experience within a live manufacturing environment. This ensures learning is aligned with industry standards, workplace safety and practical engineering application.

Mark supports this area through day-to-day mentoring, helping learners develop technical understanding, confidence and safe working practices.

STEM Engagement in Engineering

Mark is also interested in further developing his involvement in community engagement activity, particularly through STEM related outreach. This includes supporting conversations with young people around engineering, safety awareness and decision making in real world environments, where appropriate and in line with safeguarding guidance.

NEIDA engages with local schools and colleges through its STEM Ambassador programme, with a number of employees supporting outreach activities within the community. These sessions promote careers in engineering and manufacturing, while encouraging wider awareness of safety, responsibility and pathways into industry.
