An awards evening took place on Tuesday 3rd July at Kings Hall in Stoke-on-Trent, with awards being given out in categories such as Fastest Lap, Further Distance Travelled, Best Engineered Car, Best Video, Best Portfolio, Spirit of Young Engineer, Best Newcomer and the coveted Young Engineer of the Year award.
NEIDA’s school partner, St Joseph’s College, picked up an impressive two awards for both Kit Car – Furthest Distance Travelled and Best Portfolio. With the hard work and determination shown by this year’s students, both teachers and mentors from NEIDA have agreed that these awards were well deserved.
KMF’s YEOTY is a local competition that has so far reached more than 19,000 students, worked with over 55 sponsor organisations and invested over £550,000 in encouraging students into STEM subjects. The competition also leaves a legacy product with their schools for them to continue working on. This year’s competition saw Year 10 pupils designing, building and racing an electric kit car as part of the Greenpower education initiative.
The pupils were also tasked with producing a video and portfolio documenting highlights of the project and what they have learned.
The final took place at Mallory Park race track in Leicestershire on 6th June 2018 and saw familiar faces like BBC’s Mike Bushell and the Michelin man take part in the day’s events. The students competed in two one and a half-hour races, where the main aim was to travel the furthest distance or complete the lap in the quickest time.
For the fifth consecutive year, NEIDA have once again sponsored St Joseph’s College in Trent Vale, Stoke-on-Trent.
The Young Engineer of the Year project is about providing the next generation with the skills needed by industry, the project addresses the STEM skills gap and opens up career paths for students within our local area. There will be specific milestones throughout the process that nurture and develop these skills.
The YEOTY competition will return in 2019 for its 6th consecutive year, with Year 10 students taking part in “Robot Rivalry” where they will be challenged to design, build and battle robots.
